This happened to me many times on various forums and for various (sometimes unknow) reasons. Very frustrating, I agree.
To avoid this situation, now every time I type a long text in a forum I use the " COPY and PASTE" function to save the text (select the text using the mouse left button, then confirm "COPY" with the right button). Then, if for any reasons your text is lost there's no need retyping it, just click on PASTE (mouse right button) and your original text will be back ! But remember it's stored in a clipboard, meaning the data is lost if you shut down your computer or overwrite the data by another COPY. If you want to keep the data for later use better to store it in a (permanent) dedicated file. Or you might also type in your text editor (Word or similar), then Copy & Paste in the forum . It's the fastest and most secure method for long texts.

I tend to use the opposite technique for long text in general (i.e. not only for this forum).
I type the text in Word and save it as a Word document. Makes it easy to modify, add more text, check for typos and so on before posting it.
