Hot tar was poured over her and she was rolled in feathers. They decided to give her a ride on a rail. In place of the usual fence rail they obtained the cross bar of a horse drawn hay rake. This was an 8-foot-long wood bar with 8 inch long wooden pegs spaced along its length. The pegs would have been worn and splintery from years of being dragged across stony fields. Set astride this mount, pinned in place by large wooden peg, she was carried several miles along the village streets. Her ordeal lasted for about 4 hours. Almost the entire village turned out to watch. Only one person was ever charged in relation to the event. He was found innocent. Melissa spent the rest of her life in the village among neighbors who felt she got what she deserved. 1d513ca0-c7a1-11ef-a8ea-f1e3496b339d.gif

The feathers covered her modesty. It was 1870, after all.

Ridding the stang in old time Scotland. The pole was carried by men, high on their shoulders. The victim would be bounced up and down. The pole dropped and then caught, causing severe bruising to the groin area.

Actually whatever modesty she still possessed was penetrated by the prongs of the hay rake. People in 1870 did not believe women of her sort had any right to modesty. That was the aim of this sort of punishment to strip away any former right to modesty.

In 1870 Cortland New York, the mob prepairs Melisa Blye for her shameful nighttime ride. Dragged out into the street and stripped naked by the jeering mob.

Melisa Blye's naked body is coated with tar, fore and aft, inside and out. Then they roll her in a pile of feathers.
