I like ring (open mouth) gags mainly because... gimps hate them ! If given the choice they all seems to prefer tape or ballgags.

I fully concur with you: open mouth spreaders and ring gags can be good punishment tools.

In the following exemple the gag has no real purpose other than adding some discomfort to the pain.
