Problems coming our way

Post by La Reine Margot »

I have bad news and good news.

The bad news is that we're growing too fast and running out of Physical Memory Usage and File Usage. Apparently when hosting services say Unlimited they don't really mean it, at least not when to Physical Memory Usage is concerned.

Growing at the rate we're doing it, can cause problems during this month. We're monitoring the situation very closely and we will be taking some measures soon.

We might be forced to limit the number of pictures from 3 per post to 1 for the period of time that we will need to solve that issue. In some cases where the activity is incredibly high, we might be forced to temporarily lock some threads.

What I suggest is that we help by limiting the number of pictures voluntarily and decrease the number of posts per day. Some people post like there's no tomorrow. The rate of GIMP pictures to that of Dicks is out of balance, that's one observation. We might change the name of the forum to DICK forum soon. Just saying ... I mean joking ... I mean... you know what I mean.

The good news is that we will increase our capacity to maybe triple the current limits, if we can afford it, that is.

We'll be upgrading our plan and hopefully we will not have to move the sites like we had to do before. We're going over with tech support to make sure that things will remain the same and the upgrade will be a smooth step and not fraught with problems resulting in hard work.

We'll be doing that work beginning tomorrow and it should be done by the end of the week. Unless...

I hope you're all enjoying the holidays and the new year!

One idea ~ what if you continually pare the site so that every thread hits a three month mark (or some periodicity), and then everything older than that is discarded? Three months go by and the same thing happens again. That way the site never reaches an critical storage level - and people could even post large images, GIFs, links, etc., without worry that it’s heading towards a disaster level.

And perhaps “discarded” could mean archived so it’s not totally lost… but seriously, I hardly ever search for anything, much less from months ago. If I want to see a particular scene that I recall, someone can usually re-post it. That was apparent when we lost the whole thing last year and some of that content got resurrected by our many posters.

What exactly does the contract with the hosting company say in regards to unlimited storage? Does it actually say "unlimited"? If so, I'd be all over their ass about this situation. Unlimited means unlimited. We shouldn't be running out of space this quickly; we've only been with this new server a few months.

Let us know what's going on when you have an update.

Thanks for the notification. As you suggest, it's best to err on the side of prudence. As for myself, I will limit myself to one picture as you suggest. When I reply to others, I try not to include the pic I'm referring to, but rather use its link, that I imagine reduces the amount of space used. There are some posts, however, that replicate the picture or gif in ones answer, maybe that automatic replication should not be in place. I've seen three or four replies to a pic or gif with the same pic or gif in everyone, and some of the gifs appear to be very large.

Another thing that might help is to prune the threads that haven't been used or replied to in, say, three months. I don't know how much that would help or if it would mean an inordinate amount of work.

As always, thanks for all your efforts to keep this place afloat and all the best for 2022.

I agree with Navyrotor and Frog about not keeping everything for an indefinite period of time. I rarely if ever go back and search for something from months ago, and I think a 3 month limit is reasonable. I'll refrain from posting any images till it all gets sorted out, no problem, and I have already been posting reference links instead of images. If I'm not mistaken, we can also edit those images out of our replies if need be, and we should be doing that anyway.
Another thing you might do is limit the size of images posted to say 500k or something like that. I've been reducing the images I post to under that for a long time. It's a bit time consuming, but it's worth it.
As always, whatever needs to be done to help the Gimp continue will be fine with me.

How can I delete an ATTACHMENT if there's three ATTACHMENTS in the post? I can delete an ATTACHMENT if there's two in the post by pretending to add a third and then Hit the delete Button for the one I want out and the dummy I used to access the delete Buttons.

Oh dear. I am sorry to hear that you have more work to do. Personally I always do the 3 pics on each of 3 posts (usually at the weekend only) but if it helps I will cut down to one entry with 2 pics. Is that good for you?

Whenever possible, let's try to post pictures elsewhere and only use their links here instead of uploading to GIMP.

Also, WEBP tends to be smaller than JPG and JPG is smaller than PNG.
