Whipping at the Cart Tail
Whipping at the Cart Tail
Quaker heretics in both England and New England were subject to the Cart Whip act. They would be stripped to the waist and tied to the tail of a cart. The then would be dragged through the streets of the village and whipped before the assembled villagers. They would receive at least 10 strokes of the whip. Then they would be transported to the next village to be whipped again. This would be repeated until they were returned to their place of origin. In Massachusetts, three Quaker women were sentenced, in mid-winter, to be whipped in 10 towns for a total of 100 lashes. They were to be dragged a total of 80 miles through deep snow, half naked and shivering with cold.
