Drawing on non-gimp expertise
Drawing on non-gimp expertise
Hi,
After saving for the past year waiting for this year's Cyber specials, I bought a new computer after 12 years. I now find myself wondering at the best way to save what is important. The new one has a 256 GB SSD C: drive. My old one was a 500 GB that somehow declared itself the best place for immediate download storage (in Gimp's case, f'rinstance, lionrobe's lovely uploads) without me telling it to. I am ignorant on such things. I keep old versions of well-behaving programs even after 2 or 3 "upgrades." Every upgrade I tried either didn't work as well or added some way to sell something. My gif creating program alone works great and has vanished on the web.
One thing I have learned from dealing with this group of pervs is that we are all on the right side of the intelligence curve, so I am asking for advice. I am in a few groups in various places, but those here seem the most up to speed in the best sense of the phrase.
Rather than take space here, please feel free to use my gimp email, crueltiercel@gmail.com. Then again, there may be others here wondering about the same thing. It ain't torture, but it is community.
TIA,
Ed

Re: Drawing on non-gimp expertise
Hello Ed,
I too am operating on very old technology, in this case a Windows 7 laptop. If any of my work looks unsatisfactory or dated, it's not for lack of trying.
I would like to hear what the community has to offer, tech wise, as well, if you don't mind.
Re: Drawing on non-gimp expertise
I do all my gimping on my home desktop machine, which is a 9 month old Win 10. It's been a habit of mine for years to save nothing on the main hard drive where the os is. I use external (not the portable variety) hard drives for all my storage. If something happens with the os or the main hardware, I don't have to worry about losing my archives, or transferring when I upgrade. I don't let my computer save anything to C drive, but direct everything to the external when I save.

ideally a sensitive file backup should run.
all my files are on an external drive, which is automatically copied onto a second one.

Next month I will be backing up on a second hd as well. My current one is aging, so I'll be maintaining a second and larger external drive as a secondary back up.dede99 wrote: ↑Fri Dec 10, 2021 8:59 am ideally a sensitive file backup should run.
